Layers of Reflection was a collaborative drawing and collage workshop designed with the intention of exploring all the different parts of joy. From the personal to the collective we combined both reflective and active moments of making, whilst also embracing the complexity and messiness of joy. We tried different ways of relinquishing control and embracing the flow, the messiness, and the happy accidents of a range of different processes. We started with a few different drawing exercises, which generated the source material to create the collages from. We played around with pace, working fast and then slowly, then practiced letting go by working onto and into our neighbour's work. Ending with us bringing all the pieces to a long row of tables and creating a series of large-scale abstract compositions. We took time to reflect upon our daily habits through a series of exercises that built up into a collaborative mapping. These exercises made us reflect as a group on the effects these shifts have had on our mental health and wellbeing. We created small a visual representation of these experiences through stream of consciousness and collaborative making methodologies.In the second half of the workshop we made sections of these drawings into concertina zines, displayed on the shelves — all the zines show the identity of the group in that moment in time and focusing on the shared experience during the workshop and of our pandemic realities. This is a collaborative artwork where the words written in Baybayin were hand drawn by participants of the workshop In Celebration of a Lost Script. During the workshop, they were asked for phrases or words they associated with joy. Responses entailed: holding hands, family, change, peace, hope, culture and freedom. The background contains the poem Our Mother Tongue by José Rizal. First, we learnt what mindful design was, how this method works and what mindfulness is. Then we discovered the 5 ways to well-being, 5 different elements that we need to look after in order to achieve wellbeing. We did some activities to help us be present, relaxed and reflect on our experiences during and after the pandemic. Materialised using 'mindful collage', and following the disruption and thematization method used in mindful design, each participant reflected about how to implement each of the 5 ways to wellbeing into their life as a way to find joyful moments and activities. The workshop helped the audience find calming and soothing ways to connect with themselves and with their emotions through art and design. The outcome is vibrant and hopeful, and is full of nature, family, animals, and food and drink! As we emerge we chatted about what things we want to take forward, commenting that things cant be the same as they were before. Museum of Half Truths is a research project founded in 2020 by Polly Palmerini and Rachael Burns. With this project we want to think critically about museums, why we need them, how they function, and how as communities we can take a more active role in shaping them. Our first big project took place in Hong Kong in August, supported by 1a Space through their Emerging Talents in Contemporary Art International Open Call. We worked with Hong Kong based artists, writers and thinkers to look at histories that have been forgotten, suppressed and deliberately mis-remembered or mis-represented. Through our projects as Museum of Half Truths we want to create spaces for learning, thinking and making that are collaborative, equitable, accessible, playful and relevant. An Anthology of Joy is our new project in our home city, supported by Manchester Independents. We are building an archive of the small moments of joy that we have turned to for support and comfort in the time of COVID-19. The archive will be a browsable active resource; a space for sharing the coping mechanisms we have developed that people can turn to for inspiration.&nbsp; We think that it is as important to remember these everyday moments as it is the headlines and statistics, so it will also have a life beyond the end of the exhibition. By cataloguing these small moments of joy, they together form a much broader cultural picture of Greater Manchester during and post pandemic. With a background in performance and a practice rooted in process and making, her work moves across sound, ceramics, and drawing, with the methods of collage underpinning each discipline. She works with abstract forms and uses these to construct remixed narratives or create formulas for image-making; exploring visual and sonic modes of communication. Collaboration is an important part of her practice and she feels most at home working alongside other artists and pushing the limits of her skills and knowledge and getting out of her comfort zone. My curiosity towards these topics are expressed through graphic design and illustration. I have a huge passion for design and I would personally love a career where I could push boundaries and help me discover myself as a designer. In the future, I aspire to be a designer that can successfully work with important and relevant brands, magazines, or even campaigns and elevate them, while doing them justice, with design that reflects their values. With a particular interest in ecology and migration, her work is both deeply personal and yet draws on the universality of the human experience through a balance of digital techniques, aesthetics and interaction. Hannah's work explores the connection to ourselves, the earth and each other with inspiration drawn from mysticism, folklore and spirituality. Since graduating in Fine Art at Nottingham Trent in 2012, Hannah has developed a portfolio career as an artist and workshop facilitator. Hannah now works for Blaze as the Programme Producer, taking the lead on creating project opportunities for young people.
